World Rivers Day - Fourth Sunday of September

World Rivers Day is a celebration of the world’s waterways. It highlights the many values of rivers and strives to increase public awareness and encourages the improved stewardship of rivers around the world.  It is annually celebrated on the fourth Sunday of every September.  This year it falls on Sunday 28 September 2022.


History of World Rivers Day

Mark Angelo, an internationally renowned river conservationist, advocated the United Nations celebration of World Rivers Day to create awareness about the threatened water resources across the planet in 2005.

Angelo is the founder and Chair of British Columbia Rivers Day and World Rivers Day and is Chair Emeritus of the Rivers Institute at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT).

International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development”. 


In order to accelerate efforts toward meeting water-related challenges, the United Nations General Assembly declared 2018-2028 as the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development”. 

The Water Action Decade commenced on World Water Day, 22 March 2018, and will end on World Water Day, 22 March 2028.
