World Water Day highlights the importance of fresh water and to raise awareness about the 2.2 billion people living without access to safe water. It is a United Nations day of observence and falls on 22 March every year.
The UN World Water Development Report (WWDR) is released each year around World Water Day.
History of World Water Day
The day was first proposed in the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), also known as the Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit, the Rio Summit, the Rio Conference, and the Earth Summit, which was held in Rio de Janeiro from June 3 to June 14, 1992. Later in December 1992, 22 March was declared as World Day for Water. The first World Water Day was observed in 1993.

This year´s theme of World Water Day is "Valuing Water".
It is about what water means to people, it's true value and how we can better protect this vital resource.

2013: International Year of Cooperation. In December 2010, the United Nations General Assembly declared 2013 as the United Nations International Year of Water Cooperation. In reflection of this declaration, the 2013 World Water Day was dedicated to water cooperation.

2011: Water for cities: responding to the urban challenge.
2010: Clean Water for a Healthy World. Dedicated to water quality, reflecting its importance alongside quantity of the resource in water management
